DERBY CENTRAL DEPOT NOW OPEN!

Family run business Total Hire & Sales are delighted to announce the return to the place of their birth by the opening of their ninth location on London Road in Derby.

The Derby Central depot will predominantly be aimed at the DIY enthusiast and local construction companies.

The re-launch of the new depot will stock a wide range of general tools for hire, which are all the professional’s tools available for hire to the public. A full range of Personal Protective Equipment and Health & Safety Consumables, in order that the tools can be used safely and effectively are also available to purchase.

Managing Director, Andy Sewards commented, ‘It is very comforting to see the company expanding during these difficult times and feel that returning to our original place of operation is very satisfying in order that we can provide the dedicated and reliable service to Derby for which we are renowned to Derby and its surrounding areas.

The official opening is being performed by Tyson Fury on Thursday 17^th May, he will be accompanied by ex-professional boxer Clifton Mitchell who runs One Nation Fight Academy, which provides an outlet for young up and coming boxers.

Fury will be at the new branch from 3pm on Thursday and will be available for photos and autographs.

RELAX! This man has now retired!!

Barry Sewards, Chairman of Total Hire & Sales Limited presented Dave Wickes with his retirement plaque last month in front of staff at our Ripley Location. Dave has been with the company for over 20 years, and has had numerous roles within the business, mastering very few of them!!!

Seriously though, he has been an integral part of the Total Hire team over the years and his ways and his bad joke  telling will be missed.

Dave will be best remembered for his love of doing the deal, and his use of the catchphrase, hello blue eyes and who’s next to be robbed!!

His hobby of purchasing second had cars will be sadly missed amongst the staff as they are now looking for a new outlet for their purchases. In the past three years he has bought more cars than the whole of the company’s staff put together, but even away from work the lure of the negotiation was just too much for him, rumour was, he even offered to buy our Director, Carl Tidey his car off him as he drove Dave to the station!!!!

But he will be much missed and was much loved, a character of the Hire Industry; we all wish him the best for the future in his well-deserved retirement.

TOTAL HIRE WORKING HAND IN PAW WITH THE RSPCA

Total Hire and Sales were keen to get involved with the exciting plans for a new flagship RSPCA hospital and rescue centre near Birmingham.

The city has been chosen to be the home of the first national RSPCA centre in the history of the animal charity.

It will be built on a 42,000 sq ft of farmland in Frankley and become the only such centre in the country to have both a hospital and re-homing centre next to each other.

But the RSPCA needs to raise £3 million to ensure the premises can open and has appealed to everyone in the West Midlands to become involved in supporting the project through its new Leaps and Bounds Appeal.

Total Hire & Sales supported this worthwhile event by donating all the event equipment that they required to help the appeal on the way.

Carl Tidey, Director & General Manager of Total Hire commented that. ‘ It’s great to be involved and be able to support such a worthwhile cause. The new facility will provide much needed support for the RSPCA and we are pleased to be able to help them in anyway we can.”

The RSPCA spokesman is ex-Coronation Street star Adam Rickitt who has taken time out of his career to work on the appeal.

The actor, who played Nick Tilsley in the soap, said: “This new development is going to be the beating heart of the RSPCA.

“It will be the only facility in the whole country to have both a hospital and re-homing centre.

“Rescue and hospital treatment and then rehabilitation and finally re-homing – that entire cycle the RSPCA stands for – it will be the only place that can do it in one setting. The people of Birmingham should be really excited about being chosen for the site of the first ever flagship RSPCA centre.”

Total Hire get involved with local community event!

Total Hire & Sales are delighted to have been asked to be involved in this year’s Graduate Global Challenge for Rolls-Royce. For a number of years, Rolls-Royce has worked with its new intake of graduate trainees to complete a community-based challenge during their first week with the Company.  For Rolls-Royce, the project aims to give this year’s cohort of approximately 250 graduate trainees from across the globe the opportunity to get to know one another and develop their interpersonal and team working skills, whilst also making a valuable contribution in the local community. 

This year’s project was managed by Derby-based community enterprise RedWelly.  RedWelly works in partnership with social landlords and businesses to organise garden ‘makeovers’ that transform outdoor areas for the benefit of the community. Total Hire have a long standing working relationship with RedWelly and on this occasion was happy to provide a selection of power tools, spades, wheelbarrows and hand tools to assist the graduates with the task they had to undertake. 

Carl Tidey, Director & General Manager attended the event at Drum Hill Scouts Camp in Little Eaton on Tuesday 13^th September where Rolls-Royce newest employees were given the challenge to improve the grounds. ”We are proud to be part of this worthwhile community based initiative with Rolls-Royce and RedWelly. It’s pleasing to know that the work that is being carried out will be enjoyed by the young generation for years to come.”

Drum Hill is a nationally recognised Scout County campsite, situated 6 miles north of Derby. It hosts between 8000-9000 young people each year taking part in a camping or indoor residential experience as well as thousands more making day or evening visits.  As well as Scouts and Guides it is used by many other youth groups and organisations including Army Cadets, Air Training Cadets, Youth Clubs, Church Groups, community groups and Schools.

 At the end of the day the teams had completed a mountain bike course, building a wheelchair viewing platform, replacing and creating fencing and creating a memorial area.

Promotions at Total Hire

Carl Tidey is promoted from his position of General Manager to Director & General Manager and also Director of Safety with immediate effect.

Carl began his career in 1988 as an YTS Apprentice for City Hire and Sales Limited. After the company was sold to national company A-plant in the early 90’s, Carl continued his work and was promoted to Assistant Manger and then became a Sales Representative 2 years later. Promotions lead him to become the Depot Manager and the youngest General Manager of Ashtead, at the impressive age of 28.

Remarkably, in 2002, Carl won awards for Tool Hire Depot of the Year and Group Depot of the Year. In 2003 he was promoted further to become Operational General Manager, responsible for ten branches. He then joined Total Hire and Sales Limited in 2005 as the General Manager.

Total Hire & Sales was formed in 1994 and specialise in the hire and sales of building equipment, power tools and materials for the construction industry, from DIY tools to site accommodation. There is a wide range of hire products available throughout the branches in the East Midlands, which are located at Little Eaton, Derby, Huthwaite and Somercotes.

Carl said: “This is a great opportunity and as a bonus, I believe my team are some of the best people in the industry and look forward to working with them for an even brighter future ahead.”

We have an experienced mechanic on site who ensures all our equipment is tried and tested before it leaves branch to ensure it does the job for you!

Our newest addition to our East Midlands depots, our Ripley branch provides a top service for the trade and DIY specialist in all areas of plant, tool, consumable items and gas supplies. Our experienced team members are there to offer advise and assistance when dealing with your hire requests For larger items we can deliver direct to your door, just let us know when you are finished and we will come and collect it too!

About Us

Total Hire & Sales Limited was first established in December 1999, from their first depot at Victory Road, Derby, initially supplying equipment to the trade. Total Hire embarked on an expansion programme, with locations opening at Huthwaite in Nottinghamshire and Somercotes in North Derbyshire, this enabled us to target a wider market and provide both trade and the general public with plant and equipment.

In recent years, Total Hire has increased it’s core business of plant and tool hire, which has seen the addition of site accommodation with it’s own dedicated depot at our site in Little Eaton which opened in March 2008.

In June 2008 our Derby North site opened to compliment the plant and tool hire coverage and more recently a new location in Ripley opened in November 2010 and in January 2011 launched their new training centre on Alfreton Road in Derby, in the bid to offer the full package, not only will people be able to hire equipment they can also be trained how to use it competently and safely.

Our expansion has continued to support our network of branches with the opening of our eighth depot at Birmingham in March 2011.

With every piece of kit that you hire from Total Hire and Sales, you’ll find a safety operating instruction leaflet and service ticket attached. The new depot is an exciting new addition to Total Hires network of branches within the Midlands.

DERBY APPRENTICE - YOU’RE HIRED

Peter Varney, of Derby-based Total Hire and Sales, is one of the apprentices to complete the new initiative developed by HAE (Hire Association Europe), and was presented with his certificate at Myerscough College, in Preston.

The programme is new to the hire industry and focuses on developing candidates’ skills in areas such as customer service, health and safety and the safe use and demonstration of tools and equipment.

Attending the awards ceremony were representatives from ConstructionSkills, family members of the apprentices, college tutors and HAE programme assessor, Jack Haymer.

Apprentice Peter Varney said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the training programme and am delighted with the progress that I have made.
“I know that the skills that I have developed throughout the 18 month scheme will be of huge benefit as I continue with my career in the hire industry.”

Gill Bridger, commercial manager at HAE, said: “I was thrilled that all of our candidates have completed the scheme to such a high standard and shown such huge enthusiasm from start to finish.
“The training that they have completed will benefit them all moving forward with their careers in the hire industry and is a great example of the hire industry's commitment to training and skills development.”

Employees scoop up first qualification of its kind

Chris Broome, Adam Clarke, Daniel Sheldon and Paul Webster were presented with their awards at the Hire Association Europe’s Head Office in Birmingham by July Lowe, Deputy Chair at Construction Skills. They are also only 4 of 2000 students to achieve this NVQ Level 2 accreditation.

The On Site Assessment and Training Programme (OSAT) for Hire and Rental Operations to NVQ Level 2 qualification allows an employee to gain this qualification without having to leave the workplace through on site assessments carried out to prove competency in their role at work.

Carl Tidey, Director & General Manager, commented that, ‘’I am extremely proud that four members of the Total Hire team have taken part in this ground breaking qualification. Training is of great importance in this industry for all staff and something, we, at Total Hire support whole heartedly.”

TOTAL SUCCESS AT THE ASHBOURNE SHOW 2009

Children attending the 118th Ashbourne Show were given a real treat when visiting Total Hire and Sales Limited trade stand on Saturday 15th August 2009.

Entertainment was provided throughout the day including an interactive mini digger competition accompanied by a free photograph, badge making facilities, balloon and goodie bag for every child visiting the stand.

The mini digger created particular interest with large crowds gathering to observe both children and adults attempts to pick up a golf ball with the digger bucket.

The day was capped off when overjoyed staff from Total Hire and Sales Limited received the best trade stand award for their efforts on the day from James Lichfield, President of the Ashbourne Show.

Andy Sewards, Managing Director of Total Hire and Sales Limited commented “The show was a great success the weather was kind and we are very proud to have won the ‘Best Trade Stand’ Award, the whole team worked well together ensuring all visitors and in particular the children had a wonderful time, with each receiving their own photograph and a goodie bag as a memento of the day.

Total Hire Event Fencing at Derby LIVE

Total Hire and Sales Limited were pleased to supply the Derby LIVE event with security festival fencing for an outdoor theatrical play held on Cathedral Green from 1st -4th July 2009.

Local Companies Give and the Local Community Gain

Seven local companies in Derby are putting on their gardening gloves on Friday 5th June 2009 to GIVE their free time and transform an area in the playing fields of Chaddesden Park Infants School so that pupils can GAIN a dedicated space where they can read their books.

‘Give’ and ‘Gain’ Day is a National initiative of ‘Business in the Community’, taking place in more than 40 towns and cities across the UK. Volunteers from companies nationwide will be working in primary schools located in areas of disadvantage to provide reading gardens/space where the pupils would benefit from a quiet area and a fun outdoor space where they can read and learn.

Business in the Community have identified 4 schools in inner city Derby for this initiative and have partnered with G F Tomlinson Group Limited, Lubrizol, Right4staff, Nelsonlaw and Derby University to provide a reading area at the first school, Chaddesden Park Infants School.

Richard Massey, Account Manager of Business in the Community said: “On the day, the whole team will share their skills and hard work with specialist support being provided by Greg Long a local tree surgeon will be on hand to cut back a tree for the team to utilise within the garden”.

Mr Barry Sewards, Chairman of G F Tomlinson Group Limited said: “We are pleased to be involved in this local community event. The objective is to assist with breaking down the barriers to learning and offering the pupils an inspirational area to learn”.

Total Hire Sponsors the Cyclo-Cross National Trophy

Total Hire are pleased to be sponsoring this national event in Derby with all the safety barriers and fencing, wheelbarrows, and a site office and much more.

Cyclo-Cross is simply cross country cycling, it involves cycling over hard surface paths, field, woodland areas, hill and obstacles for example, jumps and tree routes. Anyone from the age of 12 upwards can take part. This event has been held at different locations over the UK and the race on the 18th will have some of the best riders country.

There will also be a race for rider under 11 - this is free to enter and great fun. All the rider needs is a bike and a helmet!

New Apprentice at Total Hire

Pete joined Total Hire straight from school this year and as embarked on a new apprenticeship scheme endorsed by the Hire Association Europe. The Hire Desk Operative Specialist Apprenticeship Programme is the first of its kind in the UK, it will involve Pete attending week long sessions at college in Preston.

'I'm really pleased to be given the opportunity of starting this new apprenticeship with Total Hire and gaining knowledge and experience of the hire industry.' Pete Varney.

TOTAL DEMOLITION AT LITTLEOVER METHODIST CHURCH

Rev Ian Worral, Minister of Littleover Methodist Church started the demolition process of the old church hall, with members of the church and the assistance of Derby based hire company Total Hire & Sales.

Total Hire & Sales are supplying plant and tool hire equipment to the project which involved demolition the existing church hall and to construct a new 2 storey modern annexe which will incorporate a new hall, meetings rooms and a sports hall facility.

The new church premises are being rebuilt to better serve the local community accommodating people of all age groups.

Total Support for John Davies Primary School

Tool and Plant Hire Company, Total Hire & Sales donated four computers to John Davis Primary School in Huthwaite for their Science Block. Total Hire & Sales are also proud to be associated with the school’s new Science Garden.

The school’s Deputy head teacher, Robert della-Spina expressed his gratitude ‘As a school, we are very grateful when we receive donations like this for our Science Project, the children will benefit greatly by having access to this technology.’
