Total Hire & Sales specialises in the hire and sales of building equipment, power tools and materials for the construction industry, from DIY tools to major building equipment.

AFTER starting as an apprentice seven years ago at Midlands-based firm Total Hire & Sales, 23-year-old Pete Varney has already carved himself a promising future.

The rising star, from Ashbourne, has achieved the status of depot manager at the firm’s Victory Road office after being fast-tracked from his apprenticeship.

He said in his experience apprenticeships are now more valuable than ever to secure the knowledge needed to enter the world of work.

Pete said: “It has taken a lot of hard work but it has really paid off and I have been able to progress quite quickly at Total Hire & Sales.

“Doing an apprenticeship was a great experience for me and I think more people should consider doing one.”

Total Hire & Sales supplies plant and tool equipment hire to the trade and general public from three depots in Derby and a further five depots across the Midlands. The company also operates a dedicated training centre in Derby.

Pete did his apprenticeship with Preston College spending his time in two week blocks between work and study.

He added: “You learn everything you need by doing an apprenticeship as you get first-hand experience so you are ready to go into work when you are qualified.

“You are also ideally placed as you start at the bottom of a company and can see how all the different departments operate. I shadowed a lot of different people which was really helpful and they were great to learn from.”

Carl Tidey, Director & General Manager of Total Hire & Sales, said Pete is a prime example of where an apprenticeship can lead to.

He said: “Pete was made depot manager in January this year and he has been invaluable to Total Hire & Sales, we are really pleased with him. He is a great example of a young person who wants to progress their career in the construction industry.

“Our apprenticeships set youngsters up with one to one mentors and a full training programme that prepares them fully for the world of work and gears them up for a positive future.”

Pete added that he never thought he could achieve a management status in such a short period of time.

He said: “When I was an apprentice I never planned to be where I am today, it has helped me achieve so much.

“If it wasn’t for Carl I wouldn’t have been able to get where I am today. His support throughout has been amazing.”
