SPECIALIST courses for construction site workers using low level tower scaffolding and podium steps are now being offered at Total Hire's dedicated training centre in Derby.

Total Hire & Sales has received accreditation from PASMA (Prefabricated Access Suppliers and Manufacturers’ Association) to add the courses to its range of training linked to health and safety construction requirements.

Carl Tidey, director and general manager at Total Hire & Sales, said: “Our training centre is going from strength to strength by extending the number of courses on offer.

“We offer on-site certification, classroom training or hands-on training to suit the needs of construction industry staff and those of their sub-contractors.  Demand for our training is growing and we want to ensure we meet the needs of our clients by providing an excellent range of courses,” Carl added.

The PASMA courses are being delivered by independent training instructor Warren Bradbury who said the 2005 Working at Height Act enforced the need for anyone working at height to be trained in how to work safely and competently.

“PASMA is nationally recognised as the lead association in these training courses and completing them will mean safer working for delegates and help ensure site managers are meeting their legal responsibilities,” Warren said.

The new half day and full day courses are for delegates who erect, move, alter, use, dismantle or inspect lightweight tower scaffolding and those who supervise or manage such operations.

Delegates gain knowledge of relevant regulations, codes of practice and good safe working to ensure they also have the hands on practical skills required.

The centre is also an IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) Official Training Centre.  This means the company trains staff in the use of powered access equipment as required by most health and safety legislation and work at height regulations, as well as offering many other training courses.

“IPAF is internationally accepted and they are strictly audited meaning courses can only be delivered by accredited instructors who are constantly audited and checked,” Warren added.

“Having Total’s dedicated training centre is an ideal environment for delivering these courses.”

Total Hire & Sales now has eight bases across the Midlands – four in Derby, the city where it opened its first depot, and others in Birmingham, Huthwaite, Ripley and Somercotes.
