Welcoming Jacob on Work Experience
As part of Total Hire and Sales commitment to encouraging young people in our local communities, we welcomed Jacob for a week’s work experience to see what a career in power tool and equipment hire could look like.

In April, 15 year old Jacob joined the Total team for a week from Murray Park Community School in Mickleover, Derby where he is studying Maths, Statistics, Triple Science and Geography.
Over five days, Jacob has worked across all the different teams at Total, gaining experience in all parts of the business from hire desk, accounts, powered access, site accommodation and marketing.
On his placement Jacob commented: “I wanted to come to Total Hire to learn a variety of skills and more about different industry sectors to broaden my understanding of what I would like to pursue in the future.
“During the week I’ve been shadowing many members of the team in different parts of the company and doing a variety of tasks to get a better understanding of the business and its customers. I’ve learnt the basic skills needed and improved my knowledge overall.
“The highlights whilst I have been working here have been the staff. They’ve been excellent in giving me information and teaching me the basics of the company.”
Andy Hickingbottom, Director and General Manager at Total Hire and Sales, said: “We’re always keen to support young people figuring out their next career steps after education by offering an insight into the world of work. It’s been a pleasure having Jacob here on work experience. He’s bright, enthusiastic and been keen to learn. He’s shadowed many different roles and fitted into the team well. We wish him all the very best for the future and the door’s always open if he wants to join the hire industry.”
Outside of work and school, Jacob enjoys playing football, badminton, racing RC cars and playing video games.
While he’s enjoyed his time at Total, when Jacob completes his studies, he has his sights becoming a Data Analyst and working with computers in motorsport industry.
